Merrell, a leading brand in outdoor and hiking footwear, has announced an exciting collaboration on an exclusive design for its innovative Moab Speed 2. This partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) highlights the essential need for mentorship while promoting their shared mission to build confidence, ignite a passion for nature, and inspire individuals to reach their fullest potential.
The limited-edition hiker was crafted through the creative input of a Merrell team member who actively serves as a “Big” mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). This collaboration infused the shoe with the vibrant colors and spirit of the organization, resulting in a lively green and black colorway, along with the program’s name showcased on the heel.
“In our fourth year of partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, we aimed to create a truly unique product ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ can wear together as they spend time outside together,” said Merrell Chief Marketing Officer Pallav Tamaskar. “Mentorship is crucial for empowering and building the confidence of young people, and our collaboration showcases its profound influence.”
Access to nature and equity in outdoor experiences are essential for laying the groundwork for a healthier and happier lifestyle. A remarkable 90% of “Littles” involved in the BBBS program have shared that they feel both healthier and happier when they spend time in nature, while 79% have noticed an increase in their self-confidence.
“The ‘It Takes Little to Be Big’ campaign redefines what it means to be a mentor and create lasting impact by being present and taking part in each other’s lives, such as experiencing every day outdoor experiences together,” said BBBSA Chief Marketing Officer Adam Vasallo. “This collaboration reinforces the power that mentorship has to unify and inspire us to make a difference in the lives of young people.”

This latest hiking innovation from Merrell is inspired by insights gathered from athletic hikers around the globe. In 2023, Merrell teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) to launch a public service announcement that highlights the urgent need for mentorship and encourages volunteer sign-ups nationwide. One of the biggest challenges for potential mentors is the belief that they lack the time or expertise required. This sparked the “It Takes Little to Be Big” campaign alongside Merrell’s announcement. Additionally, Merrell has initiated projects such as the Kids Shoe Design Contest and in-kind engagements for Littles.
The partnership between BBBSA and Merrell aims to combine their efforts to leverage the benefits of the great outdoors while increasing access for more youth. For every pair of shoes sold, Merrell will contribute $10 to further support Big Brothers Big Sisters.
