Dr. Benjamin, you’ve had a remarkable career spanning nearly three decades, with over 30,000 surgeries under your belt. What initially drew you to ophthalmology, and how has your journey been so far?
Thank you. My journey into ophthalmology began with a fascination for how the eye works and the profound impact vision has on our daily lives. The opportunity to help restore and improve vision for my patients has been incredibly rewarding. Over the years, I’ve seen the field evolve with new technologies and treatments, and it’s been exciting to be at the forefront of these advancements. I spare no expense, time, or effort to stay relevant in the field, constantly investing in new surgical techniques, materials, and equipment. It’s not just about my own training; my entire staff, from technicians to surgical coordinators and front desk personnel, undergo continuous training to ensure we provide the best care possible.
You were the first ophthalmologist in Los Angeles to perform the Acrysof ReSTOR IOL procedure. Can you tell us about this innovation and its significance in cataract surgery?
The Acrysof ReSTOR IOL procedure was a significant advancement in cataract surgery, allowing for better visual outcomes for patients. This procedure involves implanting a multifocal lens that can provide clear vision at various distances, reducing the need for glasses after surgery. Being the first in Los Angeles to offer this procedure was a milestone. It was also the first time in history that Medicare allowed patients to choose a premium treatment at their own expense, which was a groundbreaking change in medicine. This shift has paved the way for many advancements across all fields of medicine and surgery, allowing patients more control over their treatment options and outcomes.
You’ve also specialized in all-laser LASIK and dry eye treatments. Could you share your personal experience with LASIK and how it has influenced your practice?
Undergoing LASIK myself at the age of 40 was a transformative experience. It gave me firsthand insight into what my patients go through—the apprehension, the anxiety, and ultimately, the joy of seeing clearly without glasses or contact lenses. This experience has deepened my empathy and understanding, allowing me to connect with my patients on a more personal level and reassure them through the process.
Dry eye is a common condition that many people suffer from. How does the Benjamin Eye Institute approach treating this condition?
At the Benjamin Eye Institute, we use a comprehensive approach to treat dry eye. We have invested in the latest technologies, such as LipiFlow and OptiLight, which are highly effective in providing relief. Our goal is to thoroughly examine all aspects of a patient’s eye health and address the root causes of their discomfort. This patient-centric approach ensures that we tailor our treatments to each individual’s needs, offering both traditional and innovative solutions.
Your work with dry eye treatments is particularly noted for its innovation. What sets your practice apart in this area?
