Sharon Katz, renowned for her role in leading South Africa’s first diverse cultural performing group to aid in Nelson Mandela’s election during the post-Apartheid era, will be joined by a talented band. The ensemble includes Wendy Quick on vocals, Richard Hill Jr. on bass, Suzzette Ortiz on keyboards, Eric Roberts on drums, Jan Jeffries on percussion, and David Church on saxophone and flute. As a versatile guitarist, singer, and composer, Katz is celebrated for her social activism, which is chronicled in the award-winning film “When Voices Meet.”
In addition to her impactful musical legacy, Katz has been actively involved in facilitating musical projects for children affected by violence and trafficking along the USA-Mexico border and has directed productions across continents, including South Africa and Cuba. Her latest multi-media songbook, “Songs and Stories of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train,” will feature ten original songs, complete with choral arrangements, guitar chords, and archival photographs. The songbook, set for physical and digital release on September 18, features QR codes that link to recordings and videos of the music.
The upcoming concert will showcase songs from the new songbook alongside favorites that have been featured on the Grammy ballot. Music lovers can also look forward to enjoying covers from legendary South African musicians, including the iconic Miriam Makeba, with whom Katz has collaborated in the past.
Katz’s impressive collaborations extend to artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Pete Seeger, and she is featured on the star-studded “Carnival!” album alongside Sting, Madonna, and Elton John. Her remarkable contributions to music and activism were recognized when she received the Phil Ochs Award in 2019.
Following the East Coast concerts, Sharon Katz will head to San Diego this October to perform in a series of concerts with Classics4Kids, exposing thousands of local school students to the inspiring songs from her new songbook.
This celebration is more than just a concert; it’s a testament to the power of music in promoting peace and community unity. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this soulful event—mark your calendars for September 18 at Joe’s Pub!
