The streets of Barrie have taken on a new look thanks to an inventive project initiated by the city council and brought to life by the creative prowess of Ali Jammal, also known as AJ, the founder of Toronto-based art company EyJay Inc. This project, aimed at beautifying the city’s infrastructure, has turned ordinary traffic cabinet boxes into stunning pieces of abstract art, capturing the attention of residents and visitors alike.
Known for his vibrant abstract paintings and unique use of materials, AJ applied his artistic vision to transform these mundane urban fixtures into captivating public art installations. Each traffic cabinet was reimagined as a canvas, with designs featuring high-contrast colors and layers of resin that interact with natural light to create striking visual effects. This approach not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the street but also introduced art into everyday life, making it accessible to a broader audience.
“The idea was to bring art out of the galleries and into the community,” AJ explained. “These traffic cabinets are perfect canvases because they are literally at street level and seen by hundreds of people every day. It’s about democratizing art, making it part of daily life, and enhancing public spaces in a way that engages and inspires.”
EyJay Inc.’s initiative in Barrie was part of a broader trend in cities around the world, where public art is increasingly seen as a vital component of urban planning. Not only does such art enrich the visual landscape, but it also fosters a sense of pride and ownership among local residents. In Barrie, this project has sparked conversations about public art and its role in city life, with many residents expressing interest in further artistic endeavors.
The project has also been a boon for local tourism, attracting art lovers and curious visitors eager to view AJ’s work. The city council reported an increase in visitors to the areas featuring the beautified traffic cabinets, highlighting the economic as well as aesthetic benefits of integrating art into public infrastructure.
The Madison Graph spoke with several local business owners who noted an uptick in foot traffic and customer engagement since the installation of the art-covered cabinets. “It’s amazing to see how a little color and creativity can transform the vibe of the whole street,” commented one café owner whose business is adjacent to one of the newly adorned cabinets.
As part of the project, EyJay Inc. also conducted community workshops and open forums, where AJ shared his techniques and ideas, further strengthening community ties and encouraging local participation in the arts. These activities emphasized the collaborative nature of public art and its capacity to bring people together.
Looking forward, the city council is considering similar collaborations with other artists, inspired by the success of EyJay Inc.’s project. “AJ’s work has set a high standard,” said a city spokesperson. “We hope to continue this trend and keep integrating innovative art into our urban fabric.”
EyJay Inc.’s traffic cabinet project in Barrie stands as a testament to the power of art to transform spaces and perceptions. By merging utility with aesthetics, AJ and his team have not only beautified the city but also sparked a cultural movement that resonates with all who encounter it.
