Sofia Terpou is a name that is rapidly making waves in the world of filmmaking. Born and raised in Greece, this talented and passionate film producer has already made a name for herself with her award-winning short films. She is the founder of “I am Out Of The Office” production company, and she is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the film industry.
Terpou’s films have been recognized with accolades and awards from some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, including the Oscar-, Bafta-, and Canadian Screen-qualifying festivals like the LA Shorts International Film Festival, Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival and Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, NewFilmmakers NY, among others. Her films explore various themes and include elements of absurdity and satire, providing a fresh perspective on societal issues.
In her first short film, “Infodemic,” Terpou explores the new isolated reality we faced during the COVID-19 outbreak. Together with the writer and director, Elena Viklova, they highlight the negative aspects of falling into the internet rabbit hole. In times when even big studios were still struggling to define their new COVID protocol, Terpou’s creative abilities made the filming during the pandemic possible: the entire production was done online. All communications between cast and crew were happening via video messengers, having equipment shipped to actors in five countries worldwide. “Infodemic” also marks a success in Terpou’s abilities in casting. The protagonist of the film, Panagiotis Margetis, proved to be a rising talent in the industry, starring later in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “Oppenheimer,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” and others. After “Infodemic” and its success, Terpou saw in Viklova the collaborative partner she wished to continue making films with.
Their next collaboration, another notable Terpou’s film, “Dictionary,” takes a different approach. This experimental drama explores the meaning of love as experienced by a young woman in a long-term relationship. Terpou had to prove her inventive skills as a producer again as the story takes place in seven different locations over several years. Even the most attentive viewers would never guess that, in reality, the film was shot in only one location and in less than 12 hours. Again, Terpou established how resourceful she can be, finding the right creatives to pull off challenging pre-production on a tight budget. In addition to garnering positive reactions from audiences, the film was chosen to be showcased at several Oscar-qualifying film festivals, a testament to its quality and appeal.
After the success of “Dictionary,” Terpou wanted to produce with larger teams and higher financial resources. Many emerging filmmakers find it hard to navigate Hollywood as this is one of the most competitive and regulated film industries in the world – producing your first union- or SAG-project might be intimidating as it involves a whole new realm of people (agents, managers, union reps, etc.). However, Terpou passed the challenge successfully. Her latest project, the short film “Intern,” written and directed by Viklova, received authorization from SAG-AFTRA and onboarded many talented actors like Richard Riehle (Casino, The Man from Earth, Bridesmaids, etc.) and Isaac Jay (American Crime Story, The Last Thing She Told Me, etc.). Although the film just started its festival round, it has already received multiple festival nominations and even its first “Best Comedy Short” award at the prestigious Hollywood Reel Film Independent Film Festival. Following the success in festivals, Terpou’s subsequent objective is to secure funding and convert “Intern” into a feature film, in line with Viklova’s original intention.
Terpou’s dedication to her craft and willingness to take risks have made her stand out in a crowded field. That’s why Terpou’s production company, “I am Out Of The Office,” is focused on creating films that challenge the norm and provide a fresh outlook on societal issues. The company is a vehicle for her creative vision, allowing her to bring her unique perspective to life on screen.
As Sofia Terpou’s journey in the film industry continues, it is clear that she is a talent to watch. Her commitment to storytelling and her passion for filmmaking shine through in each of her projects. We eagerly anticipate discovering what she has in store for us in the near future.
