A Rising Star in Filmmaking
The film industry has seen an increase in female filmmakers making a name for themselves in the past decade. Melicka Jamshidabadi is one of them, as her works provide fresh new perspectives that are unlikely captured with the male point of view.
There are only a significant few who can write, direct, and produce their own works, and these exceptional individuals are commonly the driving force behind some of the entertainment industry’s most original and imaginative ventures.
Getting their projects off the ground can be difficult in the current entertainment landscape. However, the results are often worth it. These multi-talented people often have a unique vision for their work and are not afraid to take risks to make it a reality, especially if these goals are driven by societal impact.
A Young Eye For Film
Jamshidabadi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 2000, and moved to the United States at 12 years old. She started her filmmaking career in her first year of high school, which enabled her to take on bigger projections shortly after. At 16 years old, Melicka Jamshidabadi started working professionally in photography and film.
The young artist made a name for herself by making brand promos and frequently sharing her photography and videography projects on social media. Her distinctive perspective and eye for interesting imagery have captivated the internet community, a testament to having over 100,000 followers on TikTok and more than 60,000 followers on Instagram. In fact, her posts garner thousands of engagements each. Her work here further solidifies her exceptional talent for videography in the eyes of the public and the industry.
Jamshidabadi has seen a lot of success being a woman in the primarily male-dominated film industry. She won the Best Young Filmmaker award from the Los Angeles Film Festival in June 2018 for her short film “Disparity.” This makes her the youngest Iranian filmmaker to be recognized in the event. Her other works have earned distinction in various film festivals. She wrote, directed, produced, and edited the films herself.
An Example For Others
Being a woman alone is a challenge in a male-dominated industry, but Jamshidabadi’s success attests that with the right discipline and determination, women can also produce outstanding films that offer fresh new perspectives that can help make an impact on and off the silver screen.
Jamshidabadi cites Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola, and Jane Campion as her inspirations in the field. “There are very few female directors and cinematographers in the industry, and I hope to inspire more female filmmakers to grow in this field,” Melicka expounds. Melicka is motivated to set an example for young female artists to follow their dreams.
