Art is something that connects everyone. Without it, there would be no film, painting, or architecture. Art is the glue that holds the world together, which Matthew Gwyer is working to be a part of.
Matthew Gwyer is a young artist based in the state of Maine. He has been practicing his skills as an artist since 2014 and has sat down with us to discuss what inspires his work.
Matthew Gwyer’s interest in art began as something he wanted to try. He expressed how he would see things he liked and wanted to pursue that creativity. Thus began his desire to create art.
Like many, Matthew Gwyer found his inspiration from scrolling through artwork on the internet. He would sit down with a pencil and paper and practice recreating the images he saw.
He began nurturing his talent for art while attending the University of Southern Maine. While attending a studio art class, Matthew Gwyer’s interest in art began to blossom.
Gwyer started creating art separate from his classwork and discovered new techniques and ways of making the art his own. He would then take the artwork to his class to showcase his work.
“I was mostly just having fun with it and having it be something that I could use to relax and sort of relieve stress,” he says.
Matthew Gwyer is constantly challenging himself as well. He likes to think outside the box regarding art and attempting practices that haven’t been done before.
He says, “I think of things that I could make that would be evocative to the people that would look at it.”
He is currently improving his ability to draw and paint from memory.
Matthew Gwyer explains that he drew a lot of inspiration from historical artists. A few he mentioned were the works of Spanish painter Salvador Dali and French painter Maurice Utrillo. Gwyer would practice his technique by recreating pieces by these artists.
He also found comfort in the works of renowned historical artists such as Renoir, Monet, Vermeer, and Van Gogh, studying their works.
One Van Gogh movie, in particular, really caught the eye of Matthew Gwyer. A dutch film told through stop motion images about Van Gogh taught Gwyer the possibilities that come with creating art.
Matthew Gwyer has since started selling his art online and putting his work up in art galleries. He continues to create new work daily and is excited to share his work with the world.
A quote from Matthew Gwyer’s website reads: “When I think of how I can grow, I sometimes think that I need to establish a preset style that I can advance my skills on, in order to show depth. However, my new idealistic growth method is to absorb the influence of the world around me in ways that I didn’t think of prior.”
