At 940,000 streams currently on his single “Big Sass”, Enzo is set to become the first Utah rapper to reach a million streams on a single, independently and without a feature. With over 2.33 million streams across all platforms and some help from Sommer Ray, Enzo Dennet, better known as Enzo, has also become Utah’s most-streamed rapper, but his hype is beyond numbers and TikTok algorithms.
YouTube and TikTok comments have not been the kindest to Enzo, calling him “soft”, “the next Drake”, and even questioning his street credibility. On the flip side, he has also been called “well spoken, “genuine,” & even “refreshing”, and that’s where Enzo stands out in my opinion. In a genre shrouded by flashy facades, aura farming, and ego-centric toxic masculinity, Enzo seems to be the antithesis to almost everything hip-hop has stood for in the last 10 years while simultaneously tiptoeing the line of raw raps, with a charm and charisma that graces only the most commercial of entertainers. No tattoos, a smile at all times, a soft spoken tone, and a willingness to be open and vulnerable to his own detriment make Enzo a personality that immediately stands out. It’s easy to see where the Drake comparisons come from, but, to me, when I look at his Spotify profile picture, I see Prince, a persona bigger than his physical, and a confidence that teeters in the sexually and racially ambiguous world.
These names aren’t to be thrown around lightly, of course, but it’s easy to see how the potential could be limitless, and we haven’t even touched on the actual music itself. With songs like “Big Sass,” which is essentially a gym anthem for girls, and songs like “Break Up,” “Slower,” & “Where The Huzz At,” Enzo proves that he can take everyday moments and string them out into full-blown catchy digestible anthems, again a talent that only a few rappers have been able to unlock. The “next Drake” might be a stretch, but if Enzo was able to accomplish even half of anything Drake has done, we could be looking at Utah’s first homegrown hip hop star.
