In collaboration with major film studios and production companies, Cinemagic has partnered with LA schools, fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual growth. “From the very first program in LA in 2010, we have always encouraged schools to work together, working on common goals despite coming from different backgrounds,” says Cinemagic.
Through a variety of innovative programs, Cinemagic has ignited the creative spark in LA’s youth. A recent collaboration with the Hawthorne School District to produce a short film stands out. “The project offered a wide range of masterclass talks covering all aspects of film production, and the sessions were built on learning, networking, and significant personal growth to help students fulfill their aspirations,” Cinemagic explains.
A standout success from these initiatives is the 2023 short film “Heaven on Earth.” Created in partnership with the British Consulate Los Angeles, the film addresses climate change from the perspective of a young activist. It draws inspiration from Heaven Watson, a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Jordan High School student who has become an environmental advocate while facing various environment-related health issues. Heaven’s personal campaign against environmental and pollution problems in her community served as the film’s foundation. “We were so glad to bring this story to life and raise awareness across educational, arts, and political sectors,” Cinemagic shares.
Cinemagic tailors its workshops and projects to reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of LA’s student population, focusing on universal themes such as the environment, friendships, mental health, and resilience. The participants’ ideas drive the development of these workshops and films, giving young people a platform to express their opinions and share their experiences. “We focus on the common bonds that people have, celebrating diversity and what makes students unique as well as understanding differences,” Cinemagic emphasizes.
The organization’s dedication to nurturing young talent is evident in the strong relationships they build with educators and the careful tracking of student progress. Cinemagic not only monitors students’ achievements but also takes pride in observing their transformation in energy, enthusiasm, and self-belief from the start to the finish of each project. “We love hearing about students who have pursued ambitions after getting that little bit of encouragement from Cinemagic speakers and guests who share their stories with them and help them to keep going and working at what they are passionate about,” Cinemagic notes.
Industry professionals and mentors are integral to Cinemagic’s programs, offering firsthand insights into the creative industries. Their involvement is crucial, as they share real-life experiences and engage with students to understand their interests and goals. “Their involvement is interactive, so they talk with many of the students to gauge what they are interested in and what their personal goals are, and they share advice and insight which is invaluable,” Cinemagic remarks. This year, guests included Emmy-winning TV Producer Jillian King (Rachael, Red Table Talk), Warner Bros Entertainment EVP Dan Dark OBE, ITV Correspondent Ross King MBE, Production Sound Mixer Peter Devlin (Black Panther, Star Trek), and entertainment business affairs executive Shelley Reid.

Regular consultations with educators, students, and partners ensure their offerings remain relevant and accessible. “Our LA programs are free of charge with no financial barrier to entry, and the environments we operate in are inclusive and welcoming to all students,” Cinemagic emphasizes.
