Build Community, Not Just Contacts

Networking has a transactional reputation, and Valeria Navarrete Ferrari rejects it firmly. Her work has always centered on relationships, from the women who raised her in Mexico City to the collaborators who help bring her documentary to life. Filmmaking, she points out, is collective by nature, since so many hands build a single frame.

“You cannot make anything alone here, and you should not want to,” she says. “Find your people, and then actually care about them.” For Valeria Navarrete Ferrari, community is not a strategy. It is a way of working and a source of strength, the professional version of the sororidad she has marched for in the streets of Mexico.

In a city of millions, that closeness is also a competitive advantage. Generous people get remembered, recommended, and invited back. So she encourages newcomers to give before they ask, to celebrate other people’s wins, and to stay in touch when there is nothing to gain. Send the congratulations. Make the introduction. Show up for the small show in the back room of a gallery. The relationships you build with patience and honesty will outlast any single job, and they will carry you through the inevitable dry spells that every creative career in New York eventually meets.

She is quick to add that community works in both directions. The mentors who guided her now expect her to guide others, and she does so gladly. Helping a younger artist find a crew or a gallery costs her little and means everything to them. That generosity, passed forward, is the real engine of a creative city. New York can feel cold from the outside, yet inside its tight networks of trust, she has found some of the warmest professional relationships of her life.

Stay Rooted in Who You Are

New York will happily reshape you into whatever it thinks it wants, and Valeria Navarrete Ferrari believes the people who last are the ones who refuse that pressure. Her own practice keeps returning home to Mexico, to its women, its faith, and its contradictions, even as she lives and works thousands of miles away. That rootedness is not nostalgia. It is the source of everything that makes her work distinct.

“The city is full of people trying to sound like everyone else,” she says. “Your accent, your history, your strange obsessions, those are the things no one can copy.” Valeria Navarrete Ferrari is a native speaker of English, Spanish, and French, and she treats her Mexican identity not as a hurdle to overcome but as a perspective the industry needs.”

Her advice, then, is to protect your voice fiercely. Adapt to the city’s pace and learn its codes, of course, but do not sand away the parts of yourself that feel inconvenient. Those parts are usually your value. The newcomers who try to blend in completely tend to disappear, while the ones who bring something only they can offer become impossible to replace. In a marketplace this crowded, authenticity is not a luxury. For Valeria Navarrete Ferrari, it is the most practical advantage an artist can hold.

She has felt the temptation to shrink herself, especially early on, when fitting in seemed safer than standing out. Resisting it took courage. Yet every time she leaned harder into her own story, the work grew stronger and the right people paid closer attention. New York, for all its noise, is ultimately a city of specificity. It celebrates the singular and forgets the generic. The way to be heard in such a place, she has found, is not to shout louder but to sound unmistakably like yourself.

Let the Beauty of the City Restore You

Finally, Valeria Navarrete Ferrari returns to where she began, with the beauty of New York itself. Burnout is the great occupational hazard of ambitious people here, and she has found that the city offers its own quiet medicine, free to anyone willing to look up. A professional life lived entirely indoors, she warns, slowly starves the very imagination it depends on.

“I refuse to treat beauty as a reward I earn after the work,” she says. “The light on the buildings, the bridge at dusk, the river in winter, that is fuel, not a distraction.” For Valeria Navarrete Ferrari, working in a beautiful city is a privilege she repays by paying attention to it. A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge or an hour wandering a new neighborhood is not lost time. It is how she refills the well.

So her last tip is the gentlest and perhaps the most important. Step outside. Take the long way. Notice the season changing in the park, the steam rising off the streets, the strangers caught in beautiful, ordinary moments. New York can be brutal, but it is also genuinely glorious, and the artists who thrive are usually the ones who let that glory in. Beauty, Valeria Navarrete Ferrari insists, is not separate from professional success. It is part of what keeps you well enough to chase it.

A Career Built on Looking Closely

What unites these five tips is a single habit that has defined Valeria Navarrete Ferrari’s work from the start: attention. She pays attention to faces, to logistics, to the people beside her, to her own roots, and to the beauty of the city she chose. New York, she suggests, does not reward the loudest person in the room. It rewards the one who truly sees.

For anyone building a creative life here, that is a hopeful idea. You do not have to be the most connected or the most polished to make it in this city. You have to be present, reliable, generous, true to yourself, and awake to the beauty all around you. Valeria Navarrete Ferrari has done exactly that, one frame and one relationship at a time, and her career is the quiet proof that a beautiful city, worked with patience and love, can give back far more than it takes.

About: Valeria Navarrete Ferrari is a Mexican visual artist, photographer, and documentary filmmaker based in Brooklyn. Born and raised in Mexico City, she works across two registers: documentary and portrait work shot digitally, focused on Mexico and the women who raised her, and street photography shot on film in New York. Her thesis documentary, Las Niñas de Alfredo de Musset, on Mexican girlhood, femicide, and gender violence, premiered at the Parsons BFA Thesis Exhibition in 2025 and is now in post-production. She coordinates production for Atlantic Pictures and is a native speaker of English, Spanish, and French.
