We got to catch up with DUSTIN WOLF, who shares what a day in the life of a professional dancer is like. Dustin has starred in various productions including Netflix’s Julie and the Phantoms and Disney’s Sneakerella. From training on days off to working on the sets of big production names, tag along as we explore what a day in Dustin’s life looks like.
As a professional dancer, what does a typical morning look like for you?
Coffee first, always! I can’t function without a cup of coffee and if I am going to rehearsal or set I drink a quad espresso shot latte. I love my coffee. Then I’ll go through any emails that need my immediate attention, followed by a deep stretch to make sure I stay limber!
Fuel is important! It’s important to stay on top of healthy meals. What’s your go-to meal?
I love salad. A fresh, chicken caesar salad is my go-to. If I am having a cheat day – a good ol’ burger and fries, I’m not too picky, a pretty simple eater.
How do you stay in shape and on top of your practice when you’re not working on set?
For dancers/athletes, it’s important to always keep your mind and body ready. When I am not working on my technique or learning new choreography I do weight and cross-training. HIT training is really great for cardio and keeping your mind sharp as you’re constantly jumping from one exercise to the other. Hot yoga is always a great way to exercise and relax because it builds long and lean muscles while also calming the mind.
Working on such big productions, how do you unwind after a long day?
My guilty pleasure is reality tv. To unwind after taking a hot shower I’ll have my dinner with my favorite TV shows. I love reality tv because I feel like you can just turn off your mind and watch mindlessly.
What’s your go-to treatment for sore muscles?
Epsom salt baths always! They really do make a difference.
What does a typical rehearsal day in the studio look like?
Long and fulfilling days! Always begin with a warm-up and then depending on what we are working on we will progress through the material and clean it till everyone is cohesive.
What does a morning on a Disney set look like?
I was up before the sun rises and in hair/makeup by 7 AM! Then warm up and ready to jump on set at any given moment. It’s a thrilling and fast-paced environment, getting to work with the best in the industry.
How has COVID impacted working on big-name sets?
The industry definitely has had to adapt, and did so quickly! They definitely put safety first and there are strict protocols in place to keep production running. The positive outlook is that everyone wants to continue doing what they love so there is a team mindset and quality work ethic that is at hand.
