Everything old school is making a return. From mortal combat, and fashion, to the once so-called underground music scene.
Music has come a long way, and we’ve seen many trends come and go. However, you’ll be glad to hear that some popular 90s genres are making a comeback, much sooner than we ever thought.
From composing my own music in these genres under the name of THE KOMPOZITOR, I’ve seen these trends unfold and flourish in this modern-day music scene.
To find out more about my music and what old-school compositions are returning, see the below:
What old-school music is making a return?
Music genres are continuously getting recycled back into popularity. The old school is becoming, once again, the new school.
In the 90s, music was at its best, from rap and R&B to underground party scenes. During this era, the underground movement around the US, the UK, and the rest of Europe started to gain significant traction.
Once considered an “underground” scene, began getting remarkably popular. When this happened, music genres like hard techno, breakbeat, alternative dance, big beat, and electronic broke from the underground movement and became mainstream.
With these genres now gaining the publicity they rightfully deserve, bands like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and Crystal Method quickly become known worldwide.
However, despite many of these bands appearing in the top 40s and sometimes even in number 1s, their prominence in the music industry quickly fizzled out.
That was until now. In 2022, we’re seeing a return of these genres, and the music industry is responding well to their re-appearance.
The response is so considerable that The Prodigy has even announced a 10-date tour in the UK this year, the first time in eight years.
From this alone, we can quickly discover that people are reacting positively to these genres returning because they have a large enough audience to tour the UK.
In the last eight years, this wasn’t possible as it was probably deemed “non-profitable” for the British-native band.
What does this mean for the future of music?
Every genre, fan, and artist change preferences from time to time. Music choices get recycled yearly, and we’re just seeing a repeat of this.
All underground genres, like electronic music, alternative dance, and hard techno, are gaining popularity again. However, you can expect a modern twist on these styles.
Although some older bands like The Chemical Brothers are still releasing songs, they must meet the current and old-school trends to reach a broader audience.
However, not all artists follow these steps. I, THE KOMPOZITOR, will remain within its underground heritage, something that won’t get seen with fresh, modern-day artists.

My compositions closely relate to some of the bands discussed throughout this post. Therefore, I implement drum brake samples, heavy breakbeats, and sometimes electronic musical instruments at a high 150 BPM.
