The iconic Banff Sunshine Village is gearing up for its 95th annual Slush Cup, a beloved tradition that marks the end of the ski season with thrilling pond skimming festivities. Scheduled for Monday, May 19th, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before as the resort honors a legacy that dates back to the late 1920s.
The Slush Cup originated from a friendly dare between two friends, Cyril Paris and Peter White, who famously skied across the water on the resort’s legendary ‘waterfall’ run in 1928. Since then, what began as a casual challenge has transformed into a three-day festival, culminating in a vibrant party that celebrates winter in style.
Ralph Scurfield, CEO of Banff Sunshine Village, expressed his excitement for this year’s celebration: “You know, winter is who we are. As the snow melts, we want to throw a proper goodbye party for our favorite season—winter. Our goal is to each year throw a bigger and better Slush Cup party.”
This year, the festivities will kick off with a special performance by the University of Calgary Artistic Swim Team, who will make the first splash of the event. Following their performance, contestants will take on the challenge of skimming across a 110 ft pool filled with chilly meltwater, all in pursuit of the coveted titles of Mr. & Ms. Slush Cup. Last year, the competition attracted 100 spirited participants.
Scurfield invites everyone to join the fun: “If you love winter fun as much as we do, this is your invite to join us for a fun-filled weekend at Banff Sunshine.”
The theme for this year’s Slush Cup is “Disco Snow Angel,” encouraging participants and spectators alike to embrace a festive atmosphere. Early registration opens at 8 AM at the Village Sprung Tent on May 19th, and those wishing to join the festivities can attend for free with a Sunshine Season Pass, Spring Pass, lift ticket, or sightseeing ticket.
Banff Sunshine Village has earned its reputation as a premier destination for winter sports, boasting Canada’s best snow and longest ski season from early November to late May. Located just 90 minutes from Calgary International Airport, the resort offers visitors easy access to some of the country’s finest skiing and snowboarding experiences.
As the countdown to the 95th Slush Cup begins, the excitement in Banff Sunshine Village continues to build. Don’t miss the chance to celebrate the end of winter with thrilling competitions, stunning performances, and a festive atmosphere set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Rockies.
