Audley Travel’s team of expert country specialists has recently unveiled the top three layover destinations where travelers can make the most of their short stay by immersing themselves in different cultures. London, Singapore, and Dubai are the most sought-after choices for US travelers who wish to break up their journey and explore new cultural experiences.
London
London has a lot to offer for those with layovers. Regardless of whether you are interested in history, theater, food, art, or the royal family, the culturally diverse capital of England can easily captivate you for a few days of sightseeing and entertainment. By taking advantage of the London Underground system, you can easily hop between different areas of the city and visit iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace. You can also take a break from the bustling streets by strolling around the lush greenery of Hyde Park and Regent’s Park or exploring the Natural History Museum. In the evening, you can catch a West End show before satisfying your cravings at one of the city’s many restaurants.
Brittany Beck, Europe specialist at Audley Travel, says: “There’s so much to do in London, whether you’re there for a few hours or a few days, and its strategic location makes it a very popular stop on long-haul journeys.”
Singapore
Singapore is a popular starting point for travelers heading to Southeast Asia, Australia, or New Zealand. This is due to its extensive network of flight connections, top-notch hotels, and modern skyline. Visitors can explore the surreal greenery of Gardens by the Bay, which offers stunning views of Marina Bay from its aerial walkway. Alternatively, they can venture to Chinatown to taste herbal tea, explore Hindu temples, and peruse the shops of Little India, as well as sample the delicious street food from local markets.
“With its convenient location, wide-ranging choice of hotels, and diverse dining options, it’s no wonder Singapore is a favorite stopover choice,” says Mary Cropper, Southeast Asia specialist at Audley Travel.
Dubai
Dubai is a destination that offers almost guaranteed sunshine to travelers on their way to or from their primary destination. There is a vast range of shops and restaurants, and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, is an impressive sight. However, if you explore a little further, you can find traditional Bedouin buildings and souqs, desert dunes that are perfect for adventure, and attractions for all ages. For instance, the Museum of the Future, which recently opened, is a must-visit.
Hannah Guest, Dubai specialist at Audley Travel, says: “Dubai features on many flight paths, and makes a worthwhile addition to a wider trip. Whether you want to unwind in the dry heat, spend your way through Dubai Mall, or take the time to explore the city’s mix of cultures, there’s plenty of ways to fill a couple of days.
