Almost everyone can agree that posing is one of the most important elements of modeling. It’s one of those things that can either make or break a picture as so much emotion is conveyed through it and the message of the entire campaign can be determined from the model’s pose. I sat down with Hannah Noelle, Founder and CEO of Hannah Noelle Models, to find out her tips on posing! Here are some of Hannah’s suggestions on posing for both aspiring and current models:
1. Know what type of photoshoot you’re going into.
There are different types of photoshoots and every single one requires different types of poses. A high fashion photoshoot will most likely require different poses than a fitness photoshoot. Knowing what kind of photoshoot and the message the photographer is wanting to convey will help narrow down and give you ideas of how to pose.
2. Learn from others.
If you’re not sure what kind of poses to do, find some inspiration from other models. Buy yourself a couple of fashion magazines and look at how other models pose. Pick out a few poses that you think will work best for you!
3. Know your angles.
We all have a side that photographs better than the other. Finding your good angles
before a photoshoot can help it flow more smoothly.
4. Practice in the mirror.
Now that you have the first 3 tips down, stand in front of a mirror and put them all together! You might feel a little silly at first, but Hannah says that means you’re doing it right.
5. Relax and have fun.
Getting in front of a camera and a photographer can be intimidating for anybody. A stiff, tense body doesn’t photograph well. Take a few deep breaths and relax your body. Remember to have fun! Not everyone gets the chance to do what you’re doing.

6. Move your body!
When in front of the camera try to move as much as you can. One of Hannah’s tips is to slowly change your pose about every 3 seconds. The slightest shift in angle can really add a special element to a picture.
7. Master the three quarters pose.
This pose is a classic and should be one every model should learn. In this pose only three quarters of your body will be angled toward the camera and it creates nice depth to the picture.
8. Facial expressions are important!
Just like a tense body, having no facial expressions in pictures also doesn’t photograph well. Play around with different emotions and don’t be afraid to try different faces at the end of the day posing is an art form.
9. Use your surroundings!
Have a wall next to you? Use it! Are there props near you? Use them as well! Using anything around you might help you feel more comfortable.
10. Have patience and keep on practicing!
Although cliche to say, practice does make perfect! Learning the art of posing isn’t something that is going to come overnight. It might take a few days or even a few months, but as long as you keep practicing you’ll get it right!
